Eastbound Control Section Walker
Title:  Eastbound Control Section Walker
Description:  When BNSF put in a third track through the Cajon Pass in 2007, they created a new cross over and named it "Walker" after a former Santa Fe Railroad employee who spent much of his early career with the railroad attending the old station at Cajon. Mr. Walker was known as an expert to the railfan community and is cited in a number of publications and appears in a number of videos on the subject. Mr. Walker passed away in I believe 2007, or 2008, hence this piece of track was named after him.

JB Hunt Study - JB Hunt at Silverwood
Title:  JB Hunt Study - JB Hunt at Silverwood
Description:  More unusual images of JB Hunt containers loaded on trains. Sometimes the confluence of the sky, some high mountains, a signal tower and a train or two can cause what appears to be a twisted view of the landscape due to the bending of the light entering a wide angle, or a short focal length lens. Here however, the look of the image results from the leaning of the train and the upward perspective of the signal tower cast against the mountainous background rather than any aberration due to the light passing trough a lens.

Mile 57 on the Cajon Subdivision
Title:  Mile 57 on the Cajon Subdivision
Description:  As Autumn comes to the desert, the shadows are getting longer and the background is greening up slightly and the Yellow Rabbit Brush blooms after the intense heat of the Summer months. Eventually this scene will be covered in snow on occasion and we will once again be able to capture images in the pass with the snowy mountains in the background.

Cajon Feeder - Reduex
Title:  Cajon Feeder - Reduex
Description:  Hill 582 located at mile marker 58.2 on the BNSF Cajon Subdivision, is fairly well known by railfans worldwide as a spot to watch trains in the Cajon Pass. On the summit of the hill amongst a clump of trees, are some benches and a number of displays and monuments to different people and things. Also located there is this bird feeder, depicted here in the afternoon sun with a BNSF stack train passing in the background. Title:  Sunset at C.P. Walker
Description:  In the waning moments of a cold Winter day before the sun slips behind the mountains, BNSF 7770 leads a manifest train up the hill towards Barstow California. The MOW worker on the right is attempting to free a stuck switch on Main #2 that blocked traffic for most of the day. Cajon Pass, San Bernardino County California.

Winter Comes to Cajon
Title:  Winter Comes to Cajon
Description:  After the first snow of the year, the mountains above the pass are coated with a blanket of white. Now that the rattle snakes are all hibernating, I can break through the bush and go back to all my favorite photo spots on the hills above the tracks near C.P. Silverwood. Here a U.P. manifest train heads up the hill on the Palmdale Cutoff towards Mojave.

Passing Trains and the Deep Shadows of a Cajon Winter
Title:  Passing Trains and the Deep Shadows of a Cajon Winter
Description:  A BNSF stack train heads up the hill while a manifest train heads down (upper left hand corner). What I find interesting about this shot is that nothing came by on all four tracks for over an hour, so I decided to climb a small hill that I have not been on top of before to see what I could see. As I was part way up the hill, the Westbound train approached, then as I was hiking though the brush (there are no trails here) I heard the rumbling of the Eastbounder on the other side of the rise and sprinted the rest of the way up the hill. So this, and the crappy images of the Westbound taken into the sun are all I have to show for my impatience. I did however score some nice shots of a computer keyboard and some 12 gauge shotgun shells that I found on top of the hill. Taken near M.P. 57.2 on BNSFs Cajon Subdivision in the Cajon Pass, San Bernardino County California.

BNSF #7304 at Hill 582
Title:  BNSF #7304 at Hill 582
Description:  The flat spot on the hill to the left with the trees and the stacked stone retaining walls is a well known train watching site known as "Hill 582." The name comes from its location at mile post 58.20 on the BNSF Cajon Subdivision (the track that the train is on). Union Pacifics Palmdale Cutoff which is part of U.P.s Mojave Subdivision, is the track that is located just above the train. Here, an Eastbound BNSF piggyback train heads up the pass on a warm February morning. Cajon Pass, San Bernardino County California.

Old School Summit Shot
Title:  Old School Summit Shot
Description:  When a person looks at old pictures of trains moving through Control Point Summit on the former Santa Fe Cajon Subdivision, most of them were taken down on the dirt near the tracks like this one. Nowadays it seems no one wants to get out of their car and take a stroll down the hill from the highway to grab a shot like this. Ergo, most of the shots at Summit look like the ones referenced below. BNSF Cajon Subdivision at M.P. 56 Cajon Pass - San Bernardino County, California.

Crossing Cajon Boulevard
Title:  Crossing Cajon Boulevard
Description:  I followed this stacker down the pass from Summit and caught some good angles on it at Stein's Hill. ( Look here or Look here .) I then boogied down to Cajon Station to catch it crossing Cajon Boulevard where I almost got hit by some joker in a 4x4 trying to beat the train across the road.

Title:  Bigger than a Bread Box!
Description:  What I find fascinating about railroad locomotives is just how large they really are when you get right up next to them. Title:  While Wilma Rides up Front, FRED Takes up the Rear
Description:  Known as a Flashing Rear - End Device (FRED) or a End-Of-Train device (EOT) the unit can be either a simple tail light or actually transmit real time telemetry regarding the operation of the train to the Head-of-Train Device (HTD) also known as a Wilma. Here, FRED takes a ride on a Westbound BNSF stack train lead by #5050 as it goes over the precipice at Summit and descends into the Los Angeles basin.

Description:  A Westbound unit train of dry bulk hoppers (loaded with some type of grain) crosses U.S. Forest Service Road 3N45 while descending the Cajon Pass on the former Southern Pacific Palmdale Cutoff. The shear weight of this train was evident from the squealing brakes as it passed where I was standing and the fact that there were five units up front and three as DPUs on the rear.
